Top 5 Teemu Selanne moments
As the reality of Teemu Selanne's retirement sets in, it's time to look back on some of his more memorable contributions to the world of hockey. Selanne's 684 goals and 1,457 points in an NHL career spanning over 20 years are more than enough to earn him a place in the Hall of Fame, but it was his humility and humanity that won over the hearts of hockey fans of all stripes.
Here are the top five moments of Teemu Selanne's amazing career:
1. Breaking Mike Bossy's rookie goal-scoring record
Selanne burst into the NHL in 1993 - a season when every player and their mother seemed to score at least 50 goals. Selanne, 22, managed to distinguish himself in the crowded field of goal-scorers by shattering the record for goals by a rookie with 76.
The previous record of 53 goals was held by Mike Bossy. Selanne passed Bossy with his 54th as part of a hat trick against the Quebec Nordiques one game after scoring four goals against the Minnesota North Stars. Selanne's record-breaking goal is remembered as much for the record as it is for his celebration:
2. Winning the 2007 Stanley Cup
Selanne finally got his chance to sip from the Stanley Cup when he was 36. He returned to the Anaheim Ducks after serving brief stints with the San Jose Sharks, the Colorado Avalanche, and a season-long lockout in 2004-05. He formed a formidable scoring line along with Andy McDonald and Chris Kunitz as part of a stacked Anaheim roster that also included Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
The Ducks needed 21 games to capture the Cup in the 2007 postseason. Selanne recorded 15 points in that span, including this crucial overtime winner in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals:
3: Capturing four Olympic medals for Finland
Selanne was known as the "Finnish Flash" and he always played hard when representing his country. Selanne captured four Olympic medals in five appearances, helping Finland capture bronze in 1998, 2010 and 2014 and a silver medal in 2006.
Selanne is the all-time leader in Olympic goal-scoring with 43. He scored twice in his final international contest: a 5-0 victory over Team USA in the bronze medal game. From the look on Selanne's face, his final international goal was every bit as meaningful as his first:
4: Reaching the 600-goal plateau
Selanne is 11th in career NHL goals with 684, six shy of tying Mario Lemieux for 10th. He scored at least 40 goals in seven different seasons and holds the Anaheim franchise record with 457 career goals - 157 more than former teammate Paul Kariya.
Selanne's 600th goal was a showcase of his sublime awareness on the ice. Instead of scoring with a wonderful individual effort or bullet shot, Selanne simply found some open ice near the net and pounced on a loose puck at the end of a dominant stretch of possession for the Ducks:
5: A fitting curtain call and a Cup-winner reunion
Selanne did not record a point in his final regular-season appearance, but the night was all about him after Nick Bonino's overtime winner. Selanne received all of the three star selections as a tribute to his storied career and received a standing ovation during his victory lap.
Members of the Colorado Avalanche lined up to offer their congratulations to Selanne, but it was former teammate Jean-Sebastien Giguere - who won a Cup with Selanne in 2007 - who provided the most touching moment of the celebration:
We'll miss you, Teemu.
