Demand for tickets for Game 3 of Stanley Cup final sets StubHub record
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Demand for tickets for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final has made the Madison Square Garden contest the highest-selling NHL game in StubHub's history.
A spokesman for the online ticket marketplace said Monday's game in New York has set a StubHub hockey record for gross sales. He declined to detail the figure but said the average ticket price sold for the game on StubHub was US$1,800 as of Friday evening.
There were some 1,850 tickets available for the game on StubHub as of 9 p.m. ET Friday. Prices ranged from $1,037.10, for an obstructed view ticket, to $17,590 for a VIP rinkside seat.
The Cup final is the first in 20 years for New York.
SeatGeek reported a "marginal decrease" in ticket prices for Games 3 and 4 in New York, but said even the cheapest tickets were still hovering around the $1,000 mark.
The average price for each game remained around $1,800 per ticket on SeatGeek. But a spokesman for the secondary ticket aggregator said a second loss by the Rangers might cause "a more precipitous drop in demand" for tickets to the games at MSG.
Face value for most Rangers Cup final tickets start at $450 with an average of $750, according to the SeatGeek spokesman. Ice-level seats at Madison Square Garden can exceed $1,000.
In Los Angeles, SeatGeek reported that prices have come down "by a significant margin."
SeatGeek said the average price for Game 2 on Saturday was dipping below $700, compared to more than $800 earlier in the week.
The cheapest Game 2 tickets were moving toward $350 and were expected to fall below that number — less than face value.
SeatGeek said it was the same for Game 1 ticket resales. On Wednesday, the day of the game, tickets resold for an average of $425 with many going for less than $300.
The early start times in Los Angeles — 5 p.m. local for Game 1 and 4 p.m. for Game 2 — have perhaps made the Staples Center tickets less attractive.
