This Day in Hockey History

1975 - Orr wins 8th Norris

After scoring 46 goals and adding 89 assists in 80 regular season games with the Boston Bruins, defenseman Bobby Orr wins the Norris Trophy for the eighth consecutive season.

Orr holds the record for most consecutive trophy wins by a single player and total wins of a specific award until 1987, when Wayne Gretzky wins his eight-straight Hart Trophy; the Great One wins No. 9 two years later.

Orr maintains the record for most total Norris Trophy wins, and sits atop the all-time scoring leaderboard among defenseman with a 1.39 point per game average over the course of his injury-shortened career.

1987 - Rangers trade No. 1 pick for a coach

The New York Rangers trade their first round pick in the 1988 NHL Draft - along with $75,000 - to the Quebec Nordiques for head coach Michel Bergeron.

The 1986 Jack Adams Trophy winner leads the Rangers to a record of 36-34-10 in his first year behind the bench, but New York fails to make the playoffs; Bergeron is fired with two games left in the following season.

The Nordiques use the pick - fifth overall - to select forward Daniel Dore, who appears in only 17 NHL games, recording two goals and three assists. Notable players drafted after Dore that Quebec passed on include Jeremy Roenick, Rod Brind'Amour, Teemu Selanne, Mark Recchi, Mike Modano and Alexander Mogilny.
