NHL referee Tim Peel joins Twitter for 18 hours before shutting it down
NHL referee Tim Peel, who is not the most popular NHL referee, joined Twitter on Monday evening:
Officially on Twitter..
— Tim Peel (@TimTpeel) July 21, 2014
He joined Twitter with his eyes open, for the most part, fully understanding that he was probably making a mistake:
@Five4Howling lol..you're probably right!
— Tim Peel (@TimTpeel) July 22, 2014
After about 18 hours and having gained nearly 1250 followers, Peel relented and decided to shut down his account (or at least he stated that as his intention, the account still exists for the moment):
Sorry hockey fans..gotta shut it down#Passionate hockey fans!

It's not the fans fault..

It wasn't the harassment that caused Peel to leave social media. According to Adam Proteau of the Hockey News, Peel had to leave Twitter because NHL rules prevent officials from using social media.
At least Peel interacted with a parody Tim Peel Twitter account, so it's safe to say that he enjoyed the full Twitter experience in his brief experiment in social media:
@LordTimPeel lol..I have to admit I've had many laughs reading ur tweets..long live Lord Tim Peel
