The latest update in the Columbus Blue Jackets' contract stalemate with restricted free agent center Ryan Johansen has the two sides potentially inching closer to a resolution.
According to Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Post-Dispatch, Johansen's agent indicated they have presented two- and four-year proposals to the club; at the same time, there "hasn't been much communication between two sides lately."
Columbus is looking to sign the 22-year-old to a short, bridge-type contract; as such, Portzline adds the Blue Jackets "want nothing to do with a four-year deal, as that would guide Johansen right up to [unrestricted free agent] status. They have two- and three-year proposals on table."
What's encouraging is that Johansen appears willing to yield to the Blue Jackets' preference of a two-year contract. Valuation remains a likely sticking point, however, as the player's dollar demands may be raised in light of a shorter than desired agreement from his point of view.
The belief is progress will hasten as a new season approaches.
It isn't just yet. But some point soon, the biggest motivator will be the calendar. Training camp begins six weeks from today.
