1989 - Stellick resigns as Maple Leafs general manager
Gord Stellick steps down from his post as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, 16 months after becoming the youngest GM in National Hockey League history.
Stellick cites interference from 86-year-old owner Harold Ballard at a news conference in Toronto.
The 1988-89 season was a difficult one for the Leafs. The team finished last in the Norris Division with 62 points and head coach John Brophy was relieved of his duties by Stellick in December of '88.
Interim head coach George Armstrong led the team to a late-season surge, but they ultimately missed the playoffs.
As for Stellick, he was hired by the New York Rangers as an assistant GM but fired in 1990.
