2011 - Lokomotiv Yaroslavl club killed in plane crash

The entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team playing in the KHL was lost in a plane crash while flying to their next game. There were no survivors in the tragedy and 44 lives were lost.

For the last three years, no games have been played on Sept. 7 to honor the fallen members of the KHL.

Noted NHL players who lost their lives in the crash were Pavol Demitra and Ruslan Salei, as well at Stanley Cup winning coach Brad McCrimmon.

1945 - NHL rules implemented through amateur hockey

In 1945, the NHL makes hockey history by announcing that all the rules the NHL upheld in its league would be followed by all levels of organized hockey.

As a result, all professional and amateur hockey had a uniform way of playing across the world.

1988 - A stacked Hall of Fame class is inducted

The 1988 Hockey Hall of Fame class is one to remember. Goaltender Tony Esposito, forward Guy LaFleur and defenseman Brad Park are inducted as players.

Esposito played 15 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks after playing his first season with the Montreal Canadiens. In 886 games played, Esposito holds a record of 423-306-151 and sits seventh on the all-time wins list.

Guy LaFleur played all but one season in the province of Quebec. He spent 14 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, then retired for three years before returning to the NHL, playing a year with the New York Rangers, and his last two seasons with the Quebec Nordiques. In 1,126 games played, LaFleur scored 1,353 points, including 97 game-winning goals.

Brad Park split his career between the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins before finishing it off in Detroit for two seasons. Over an 18-year career, Park appeared in 1,113 games for 896 points including 93 power play goals. He sits 13th on the all-time scoring list for defensemen.
