NHL adopts wider hash marks on faceoff after preseason test

Marc DesRosiers / USA Today

Players on opposing teams will be spaced slightly farther apart on offensive and defensive zone faceoffs under the NHL's new rule on hash marks, which increases their spacing by 31 inches.

Neutral zone faceoffs will not be affected by the rule change.

Enforcers struggled with the new hash marks during preseason contests since the wider spacing limits their ability to engage their opponent prior to puck drop, as seen before this fight between Mike Weber and Colton Orr.
