Trevor Gillies will sit for a month because of his heinous actions during Friday's AHL game between the Adirondack Flames and the Rochester Americans.
The AHL announced the 12-game suspension on Monday. Gillies will be eligible to return to Adirondack's lineup on November 15.
Gillies, who has not seen NHL action since appearing in three games with the New York Islanders during the 2011-12 season, apologized for slamming the head of Buffalo Sabres prospect William Carrier into the ice during a fight.
The 35-year-old has a long history of violent incidents throughout his career.
In his pro career, Trevor Gillies has played 57 NHL games and been suspended for 31 games.
