3 things you need to know
NHL community honors fallen Canadian soldiers
After the tragic events of the past week, the late Cpl. Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent were honored in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal on Saturday night in a simultaneous pregame ceremony.
In Ottawa, the Senators and New Jersey Devils gathered at center ice and observed a moment of silence for the victims.
Several Senators fans wore Cirllo's name on the back of their jerseys in another display of gratitude.
It's real out in California
The San Jose Sharks broke skin, but stopped the bleeding Sunday night in an early-season in-state contest saturated with late-round postseason hate.
The Sharks survived nine fighting majors, eight misconducts, 165 minutes in penalties, and all kinds of warfare to end a four-game losing skid and hand the red-hot Anaheim Ducks their first loss in eight tries.
There were the usual suspects (John Scott was penalized for leaving the bench to engage in a line brawl), but there wasn't a player on the ice safeguarded from the fisticuffs. Stars Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf each dropped the gloves twice, while Joe Pavelski was battered in a one-sided tilt with Ben Lovejoy.
Whether you're a supporter of fighting or not, the best, most-spirited hockey in the NHL right now resides in California. Oh, and meanwhile, the Los Angeles Kings won their sixth consecutive game Sunday in a 5-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Canadiens make history
The Montreal Canadiens won their fourth straight game, defeating the New York Rangers 3-1 on Saturday night. It was Montreal's seventh win, which tied the franchise record for wins in the first eight games of the season.
It's also the best start for the Canadiens since 1961.
Carey Price stopped 34 of 35 shots to preserve his sixth win of the campaign, while Tomas Plekanec's short-handed goal was his fifth of the season.
Montreal heads out on a three-game Western road swing against the Edmonton Oilers, Calgary Flames, and Vancouver Canucks this week.
Highlight Reel
O Canada
The most moving part of the synchronized pregame ceremony was the simultaneous performance of "O, Canada" in Ottawa, Toronto, and Montreal.
The audio feeds were blended together as fans in all three arenas sung in unison, producing an incredibly unique and powerful moment.
Man disadvantage
Canadiens forwards Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec made the dormant New York Rangers power play look even worse, scoring on a 2-on-0 while short-handed in the first period on Saturday night.
Pacioretty added a goal of his own in the third period.
The ageless one does it again
Devils forward Jaromir Jagr beat Senators goaltender Robin Lehner in overtime, giving New Jersey a 3-2 win on Saturday night.
The goal was Jagr's league-leading 125th game-winner, and it snapped the Devils' four-game losing streak.
Say What?
Sharing is caring
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri provided the most revelatory quote of the weekend following his club's 4-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on home ice Saturday night.
Oh, Darryl
The Los Angeles Kings boast two Corsi superstars in Drew Doughty and Jake Muzzin, but their head coach doesn't exactly know how possession statistics work.
We know Darryl Sutter isn't a fan of analytics, but the always quotable bench boss showed his lack of understanding of shot-attempt tracking when asked if he's concerned about the Kings' early disparity by Jon Rosen on Saturday:
We had a game three or four games ago where [forward Anze] Kopitar had two quality scoring chances on one shift but he didn’t have a shot on goal in the game. There are lots of people, quite honest, that sit in the press box that don’t have anything to do. Somebody should actually do that stat, because it’s amazing when you do it yourself what the discrepancy is. Everyone grabs that sheet at the end of the period and goes, ‘Oh, oh.’ [Reporter: Do you keep those numbers?] I can tell you how many scoring chances, how many shots almost right dead on when I walk off the ice, and all I have to do is confirm it when I watch it later. I don’t know much, but I can count. [Reporter: Are there certain buildings around the league that are notorious for maybe on one side, favoring one team?] Yeah, there’s one. One that I’m really familiar with.
We hope someone told Darryl there are several stats (Corsi and Fenwick being the most effective) which track attempts that don't necessarily count as shots on goal.
Top Fantasy Lines
F Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson, Tyler Toffoli - Kings
- That 70's line continues to pace the defending champion Kings, combining for four goals and 10 points in a 5-2 win over the Blue Jackets.
F Frans Nielsen - Islanders
- A hard-boiled detective who takes no prisoners, Dennis Frans Nielsen scored a hat trick in the New York Islanders' 7-5 victory over the Dallas Stars on Saturday evening. Nielsen finished with three goals, six shots, a plus-2 rating and a hit thrown for good measure.
F Sidney Crosby - Penguins
- Sidney Crosby scored a goal, tacked on two assists, finished a plus-1, took two shots on goal and threw three hits in Pittsburgh's 3-0 victory over the Nashville Predators.
D Dougie Hamilton - Bruins
- Boston Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton had something of a statement game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The young blue-liner was second among Bruins defenders in time on ice and managed a goal, two assists, a power-play point, four shots on goal and three hits.
D Dennis Wideman - Flames
- Among the who's who of NHL superstars resting on five goals for the season, Dennis Wideman remains the obvious outlier. The Flames' blue liner scored in his fourth consecutive game Saturday night and has five in six games since being healthy scratched.
Injury Ward
- Anze Kopitar left Sunday's win over the Blue Jackets with an apparent upper-body injury. The Kings' star centerman has missed just a single game over the three previous seasons.
- Nick Foligno was taken off the ice on a stretcher Sunday after colliding with a linesman, but is believed to have avoided a significant injury.
- Possession stats darling Dan Carcillo will miss a month after suffering a knee injury Saturday.
- Eric Staal could return
for showcasefor Tuesday's game with the Canucks.
