Lawyer: Voynov 'being punished more severely than anyone else' by indefinite suspension

Slava Voynov's lawyer spoke out against the Los Angeles Kings defenseman's indefinite suspension Friday, saying his client is frustrated he cannot play while under investigation.

"Mr. Voynov is being punished more severely than anyone else," Craig Renetzky told Kevin Allen of USA Today. "What happens if they don't file charges and he's sitting (without playing) until December or January? It's just not right and not fair."

The NHL suspended Voynov on Oct. 20, when he was arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse. He has a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 1, but Renetzky says that date is not certain.

"They don't have to file on Dec. 1. They could keep investigating and we could be in the same place a year from now," he said.

Voynov and his agent are asking the NHL to lift the suspension, but the ongoing criminal investigation limits what he could say in a potential hearing with the league.
