This Day in Hockey History
1931 - Maple Leaf Gardens opens its doors
The Toronto Maple Leafs play for the first time in the building they would call home for nearly seven decades, losing 2-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks on opening night at Maple Leaf Gardens.
Blackhawks winger Mush March scores the first goal in the new arena, which is referred to as a "miracle in engineering" at the time, having been constructed in only five months.
It's also the night of another first, as legendary voice Foster Hewitt calls his inaugural Hockey Night in Canada radio broadcast from a newly-constructed gondola.
The best seats at Maple Leaf Gardens cost $2.75 on opening night.
2013 - Sabres clean house
After beginning the season with a 4-15-1 record, the Buffalo Sabres fire head coach Ron Rolston and general manager Darcy Regier.
Rolston's tenure ends with a 19-26-6 record as head coach. Regier is dismissed after serving in the GM role since 1997.
Owner Terry Pegula announces that former Sabres bench boss Ted Nolan has been re-hired, while former Sabres forward Pat LaFontaine has been hired as president of hockey operations.
LaFontaine resigns from the organization four months later.
