1958 - Maple Leafs hire 'Punch' Imlach as GM
The Toronto Maple Leafs hire George "Punch" Imlach as the team's new general manager, four months after bringing him on as an assistant GM.
Imlach appoints himself head coach eight days later and the Leafs eventually finish fourth with a record of 27-32-11, losing to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Final.
Toronto wins four Stanley Cups (including the club's most recent championship in 1967) and appears in six Cup Final series under Imlach, who remains with the club until his firing in 1969.
