Bruins' Bartkowski on Gionta hit: 'I didn’t see any head contact'

Bruce Fedyck / USA TODAY Sports

Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Bartkowski was relieved to learn he will not receive supplemental discipline for his hit on Buffalo Sabres captain Brian Gionta.

Bartkowski was ejected from Sunday's game in the first period after flipping Gionta around with a massive check. The Bruins blue-liner didn't see anything wrong with his hit, which knocked Gionta out of the contest.

"It was just a play in the game. You don't like to see players exit the game, and it wasn't my intent to injure anybody," Bartkowski told CSNNE's Joe Haggerty. "It was just a hit. I watched the replay, and I didn't see any head contac... I was just pissed that I had to leave the game."

Gionta will miss Tuesday's game between the Sabres and the Detroit Red Wings.
