Way-back Playback: Franzen's fantastic 5-goal flurry

The five-goals-in-one-game club is one of the most exclusive in NHL history; only 44 players have achieved the feat, combining to do it 60 times. 

Just how hard is it to score five goals? Consider that, entering the 2010-11 season, it had been done just once in the previous 15 years (that honor belonged to Marian Gaborik, who tallied five times for Minnesota in a 6-3 win over the New York Rangers on Dec. 20, 2007). 

Detroit's Johan Franzen had come close before, scoring four times in the Red Wings' 7-1 win over San Jose in their 2010 second-round playoff series. But Franzen did one better on this date four years ago, annihilating the Ottawa Senators in one of the most dominant performances of the season: 

Franzen remains the last player to score five goals in a game - and with the way teams have ratcheted up the goaltending and defense in recent seasons, it could be a while before it happens again.
