Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley told Derek Wills of Sportsnet 960 The Fan that captain Mark Giordano won't play Friday against the New York Islanders.
Giordano, who is the NHL's top point-producing defensemen, is out with an upper body injury after an accidental trip by New Jersey Devils forward Steve Bernier on Wednesday.
Flames general manager Brad Treliving confirmed Giordano would be out for an undisclosed period of time.
The Flames are in contention for the playoffs, sitting one point behind the Minnesota Wild for a wild card spot, so the loss of Giordano is a major one.
Giordano has 48 points in 61 games.
