Canucks to honor late Pat Quinn against Flyers on St. Patrick's Day
The Vancouver Canucks' memorable run to the Stanley Cup Final in 1993-94 was thanks to a squad featuring the likes of Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure and Kirk McLean on the ice and one of the most recognizable coaching figures to ever man a bench guiding the team.
That man was Pat Quinn, and the Canucks will honor the late coach, who passed away Nov. 23, 2014, in a ceremony at Rogers Arena on St. Patrick's Day against the Philadelphia Flyers.
The day for the event is a perfect fit, as Quinn was nicknamed "The Big Irishman" during his playing career.
"We are excited to honor and celebrate Pat Quinn on St. Patrick's Day," Canucks president of hockey operations Trevor Linden said in a statement.
"Pat was an inspiration to all of us. He had such a profound impact on the hockey landscape in this city and on the commitment this organization has made and continues to make in the community."
The opponent for Vancouver makes for an even more perfect setting as Quinn also led the Flyers to a record-breaking 35-game unbeaten streak and a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1980 - his first season with the team.
Quinn was honored by the Canucks shortly after his death, but Tuesday's pre-game ceremony will be a larger tribute, with Quinn's family expected to be in attendance along with several players from the 1993-94 Canucks.
Quinn earned 300 wins in his NHL coaching career behind the benches of the Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.
