Report: Flyers, Penguins planning to celebrate 50th anniversaries with outdoor game

The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins are hoping to celebrate their 50th birthdays in style.

Both clubs are set to hit the half-century mark in 2017, and Flyers chief operating officer Shawn Tilger let it slip at a recent town hall meeting that the rivals have been discussing a joint celebration featuring an outdoor game at "a certain stadium in Pennsylvania," according to Frank Seravalli of the Daily News.

The Flyers and Penguins have already appeared in five outdoor games respectively, but Tilger noted NHL and NBC have been "very receptive to the idea."

Possible sites include Penn State's 106,572-seat Beaver Stadium, or Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania, which boasts a capacity of 52,593.

While the event has yet to be confirmed, expect fireworks if these two teams do indeed take their heated rivalry outdoors.
