The Edmonton Oilers' dynasty of the 1980s remains one of the most dominant in NHL history - but the Oilers might have seen their reign start even earlier were it not for one of the most stunning collapses ever.

On this date 33 years ago, the Los Angeles Kings rallied from a five-goal deficit to shock the Oilers 6-5 in overtime of Game 3 in their best-of-five opening round Campbell Conference playoff series:

What was supposed to be a one-sided matchup - Edmonton finished with 111 regular-season points, 48 more than the lowly Kings - didn't start out that way, as Los Angeles opened with a wild 10-8 victory behind four goals from the "Triple Crown" line of Marcel Dionne, Charlie Simmer and Dave Taylor.

Edmonton replied with a 3-2 overtime victory the following night - Wayne Gretzky scored the winner 6:20 into the extra period - and the Oilers took command in Game 3, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage through two periods behind four points from Gretzky.

What happened next became an unexpected piece of hockey lore.

Jay Wells put the Kings on the board 2:46 into the third period, and Doug Smith trimmed the deficit further with a power-play goal just over three minutes later. Simmer's second tally of the post-season brought fans at the Forum to their feet at 14:38, and Mark Hardy made it 5-4 with 4:01 remaining in the frame.

With the Kings enjoying a late 6-on-4 advantage and the Oilers desperately trying to hang on, Steve Bozek sent the crowd into hysterics with a quick backhand that beat Oilers netminder Grant Fuhr between the pads.

Rookie Daryl Evans capped the historic comeback 2:25 into OT, beating Fuhr on the glove side with a perfectly placed slap shot to give Los Angeles a surprising 2-1 series lead.

The Kings went on to win the series in five games, sending the upstart Oilers home early and delaying one of the league's most dominant stretches - at least for one season.
