Former NHLer Joe Juneau testifies in fraud case against accused scammers
Former Montreal Canadiens forward Joe Juneau was the first ex-NHLer to take the witness stand in a case against two men accused of conning many current and former players out of millions Monday.
Juneau testified against two men - Phil Kenner and Tommy Constantine - who worked as financial advisers and took money meant for investments and used it for personal use, according to Teri Thompson, Michael O'Keefe and Nathaniel Vinton of New York Daily News.
"It became evident that a lot of money I had invested toward the end of my hockey career was lost,” Juneau said of Kenner. The two were good friends and Kenner was even the best man at Juneau's wedding. "I became very uncomfortable with things, because it became very hard to reach him, to speak to him.”
Other players impacted by the two alleged scammers include Ethan Moreau, Michael Peca, Owen Nolan, Sergei Gonchar and Bryan Berard (who alleges he's out nearly $3 million), among others.
Kenner and Constantine are alleged to have swindled a total of nearly $30 million from players.
