Report: Coyotes hire analytics guru John Chayka as assistant GM
The rebuilding Arizona Coyotes are adding some youth to the front office as well as on the ice.
The club is expected to announce the hiring of 25-year-old analytics guru John Chayka as assistant general manager, according to Aaron Ward of TSN.
Chayka is a co-founder of Stathletes Inc., a St. Catharines, Ont. based company that provides in-depth statistics on hockey players’ performance.
From the Globe and Mail:
With information gleaned from more than 30,000 data points during a game, Stathletes offers hockey’s decision makers rich insight that can help them ensure an optimal mix of talent as well as guide them in training their players.
As of June, 2014, two NHL clubs had subscribed to the services provided by Stathletes, and Chayka appears to have translated his work there into a front-office job at the NHL level, assisting GM Don Maloney in building a winner in the desert.
The Coyotes finished 29th in the NHL standings this season, and 22nd in terms of Corsi with a rating of 48.7 percent.
