Shanahan: Maple Leafs won't 'shake the hockey world' with free-agent splash
For fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs, there won't be a free-agent signing to rue from the summer of 2015. Not a major one, at least.
President and shot-caller Brendan Shanahan told Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun the team will be involved in the free agent market - which officially begins Wednesday - but won't dominate the proceedings.
"We'll be active, but we might have a different set of targets than other teams. But I don't know if we'll be the headline stealers," Shanahan said.
"I don't think we'll shake the hockey world," he added.
His assertion is consistent with the strategy Toronto has heeded since the season ended. Shanahan, along with Kyle Dubas, Mark Hunter, and Mike Babcock, figure to be in the market for prospects and veterans that can aid development, rather than big-money acquisitions.
