Oilers to honor Glen Sather with banner-raising ceremony Dec. 15
The Edmonton Oilers are set to celebrate the achievements of legendary team builder Glen Sather.
Prior to their game against the New York Rangers on Dec. 11, 2015, the Oilers will honor Sather for his role in bringing five Stanley Cups to Edmonton.
Sather - inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 - won four cups as the club's head coach (1984, 85, 87, 88) and a fifth in 1990 as team president and general manager.
"I can tell you with certainty, none of that success would have happened without Glen Sather,” Oilers Entertainment Group Vice-Chair Kevin Lowe wrote in a statement Monday. "Glen was a mentor, leader, protector and father figure for so many players that wore the Oilers sweater. He showed us what it meant to be champions both on and off the ice.
"It will be a very special day for our fans and organization when we celebrate Glen’s contribution and have him join our other legends in raising his banner to the rafters at Rexall Place."
Sather served as GM of the Rangers from 2000 until this summer. Under his watch, New York went to the Eastern Conference Final three times in the past four years, with a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.
He is currently serving as Rangers team president.
