Report: Senators close to hiring Daniel Alfredsson for front-office role
The Ottawa Senators are set to welcome Daniel Alfredsson back into the fold.
The two sides are in the final stages of working out a deal that will see the former longtime Senators captain accept a role in the club's hockey operations department, according to Ian Mendes of TSN.
Alfredsson spent his final playing days as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, after a contentious, failed contract negotiation with the Senators back in 2013. He officially announced his retirement from professional hockey in Ottawa last December, however, and any bad feelings were seemingly buried when the Senators hosted an emotional pregame ceremony celebrating his career.
Despite being eclipsed by Chris Phillips as the Senators' all-time leader in games played this past season, Alfredsson remains the franchise leader in goals (426), assists (682), and points (1108), and he served as team captain for 13 seasons.
Alfredsson's official role with the club is not yet known, but an announcement is expected prior to the start of training camp next month.
