Former NHL forward Michael Nylander has been named an assistant coach of the OHL's Mississauga Steelheads, the Canadian junior club announced Sunday.

The elder Nylander will coach his son, Alexander, who committed to the Steelheads on Saturday.

Michael was behind the bench for Mississauga's first preseason game on Sunday, a 4-0 loss to the Kitchener Rangers.

The 42-year-old scored 209 goals and notched 679 points in 920 career regular-season games for seven NHL teams over 15 seasons.

Alexander was the Steelheads' first-round selection in the 2015 CHL Import Draft. His brother, William, was the Toronto Maple Leafs' eighth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
