Fantasy: 5 players to consider adding in the wake of McDavid's injury

Perry Nelson / `USA TODAY Sports

Edmonton Oilers rookie Connor McDavid is expected to be out for multiple months with a broken clavicle, which is devastating news for the organization.

It's also bad news for his fantasy owners, who likely had high hopes for the first overall pick before his rookie season was cut short after only 13 games.

There's no replacing McDavid's near-point-per-game pace or potential, but there are plenty of reliable alternatives on the waiver wire in standard leagues.

Here are five centers to consider adding to fill the void in McDavid's absence:

Leon Draisaitl, Edmonton Oilers

23 percent owned in Yahoo leagues

The 20-year-old has seven points in three games since being recalled from the AHL, and he's a prime candidate to take McDavid's spot at center on the second line between Benoit Pouliot and Nail Yakupov.

Draisaitl won't keep up his current pace, but he'll be given plenty of opportunities to produce, and should provide 50-55 points.

Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings

49 percent owned in Yahoo leagues

Somehow, the Red Wings rookie is still available in about half of Yahoo leagues, despite notching four goals and five assists in the first 12 contests of his NHL career.

The 19-year-old is skating on Detroit's top line alongside Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader, and he's a plus-10 as a result.

Grab him immediately if he's out there.

Nazem Kadri, Toronto Maple Leafs

24 percent owned in Yahoo leagues

Kadri has only one goal to go along with his five assists, but a closer look at the numbers reveals the scoring is bound to come.

He has 46 shots on goal, which ranks 10th in the NHL, and he's done it in only 11 games. Kadri will continue to get time on the Leafs' power play, and should produce once his shooting percentage improves.

Mikko Koivu, Minnesota Wild

41 percent owned in Yahoo leagues

The Wild captain has 11 points in 11 contests, and he had an eight-game point streak snapped on Saturday.

Koivu only has 17 shots, and he's never been a dynamic goal-scorer, but he should continue to pile up points centering Minnesota's top power-play unit and setting up Jason Zucker and Nino Niederreiter on the second line.

Frans Nielsen, New York Islanders

20 percent owned in Yahoo leagues

Nielsen registered four goals and two assists during a four-game point streak before being held off the scoresheet over the last two contests.

The Islanders have sputtered without John Tavares, but Nielsen still has nine points in 13 games, and he's playing on the top line between Anders Lee and Kyle Okposo in the captain's absence.
