Scott Gomez inks tryout deal with Capitals' AHL affiliate

The Washington Capitals now have insurance for their center-ice insurance.

Scott Gomez, 36, has signed on with Washington's minor-league affiliate, the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears, on a professional tryout basis, the team announced Thursday.

The agreement comes a week after the Capitals bolstered their depth through center by signing fellow veteran free agent Mike Richards.

Gomez, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and veteran of well over 1,000 games, was waived and had his contract terminated by the St. Louis Blues on Dec. 30.

He scored a goal and eight points in 21 games this season, pushing his career point total to 755.

If he does indeed see action, it will be Gomez's first stint in the American Hockey League.
