Australian Olympic Committee deems athletes' village uninhabitable
With just two weeks remaining until the opening ceremony of this year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil may have yet another crisis on its hands, this one in regards to the living quarters for the 10,500 athletes and over 7,000 staff members.
The Australian Olympic Committee deemed on Sunday evening that the athletes' village is uninhabitable for the time being, according to the Sydney Morning Herald's Greg Baum.
"From what we've seen, you wouldn't put people in there yet," said a spokesperson.
The hope was that the first Australian athletes would be able move in Sunday. However, contingency plans have been made instead, with some of the staffers for the committee itself working out of a nearby hotel until further notice.
Other countries are also unwilling to use the facilities until changes are made.
The Rio organizing committee is working on repairing some of the issues, including what the spokesperson says are leaking pipes, spot flooding, blocked toilets, unlit stairwells, and other complications.
