It seems U.S. gymnast Laurie Hernandez's dream of competing in the all-around at Rio 2016 is all but over.

Hernandez went last during podium training on Thursday, indicating that barring injury, she will not be chosen for one of two U.S. spots in the individual all-around.

The 16-year-old who lit up the trials in San Jose in July was very diplomatic when asked about the prospect of sitting out the individual all-around.

"I wouldn't say I'm disappointed," Hernandez said after training, according to Alyssa Roenigk of ESPN. "This is what the team needs. If the team needs someone that is strong and consistent and can help the team in bars, I say that's what we do. Martha is very smart and knows the right decision."

Her coach, Maggie Haney, was more critical of the apparent decision, citing Hernandez's performances of late.

"I'm disappointed at the possibility of her not competing in the all-around," Haney said. "I have to respect the decision, but it's hard when I look back and realize she was second both days at Trials and had the second-highest all-around score to Simone coming in. I don't know what to say. I've cried a lot this week."

While the writing is on the wall for Hernandez - with Simone Biles guaranteed to compete, while Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas will battle for the second spot - team coach Martha Karolyi says no final decision has been made.

"We didn't decide 100 percent yet," Karolyi said. "We will have the meeting tonight. We will analyze everything. But we have our tentative lineup."
