Preeminent powerhouses continue to be sent packing from Rio 2016.

Mexico, who arrived in Brazil as the defending gold medalist from London 2012, was eliminated from the men's soccer tournament Wednesday by virtue of a 1-0 loss to South Korea.

El Tri, who lost marquee striker Oribe Peralta midway through the competition due to a nasal fracture, was pipped to second place in Group C by Germany, the latter annihilating Fiji 10-0 to leapfrog the reigning Olympic champions, and reach the knockout stages.

South Korea earned top spot in the section, and will now play Honduras in the quarterfinals. Germany, meanwhile, will clash with Portugal.

The results in Group C came shortly after Argentina, gold medalist in 2004 and 2008, was also sent home early after a disappointing draw against the aforementioned Hondurans.
