Penny Oleksiak advances to 100m freestyle final
Penny Oleksiak will race for a third medal at Rio 2016.
The 16-year-old swimmer, and Canada's most successful athlete so far at Rio 2016, eclipsed her previous best time by more than half a second and set a Canadian record Wednesday as she advanced into the 100m freestyle final.
Oleksiak's time of 52.72 was second best in qualification for the final, and a swim faster than the previous Olympic record. However, the favorite in the event, Australia's Cate Campbell, touched the wall one-hundredth of a second earlier in the lane beside Oleksiak.
Canadian Chantal Van Landeghem failed to advance, posting the 10th-fastest time overall.
Oleksiak captured silver in the 100m butterfly and swam the anchor leg for the 4x100m relay team that won bronze on the first day of competition.
