Initially an alternate for the squad, Danell Leyva will leave Rio as the most accomplished male U.S. gymnast from the championships.
Leyva claimed his second silver in Rio on the parallel bars Tuesday, setting a standard only Oleg Berniaiev of Ukraine could surpass as the first of eight competitors in Tuesday's final.
Russia's David Belyavskiy won bronze.
Leyva's silver is the first medal won on parallel bars by an American since Jair Lynch captured the same shade in 1996. He won his first silver on the horizontal bar earlier in the competition.
The 24-year-old, a member of the U.S. team that won bronze in the all-around four years ago in London, was only appointed to the squad after John Orozco re-injured his ACL last month.
