U.S. track star Richardson not on relay team, won't compete in Tokyo
American track star Sha'Carri Richardson won't participate in the Tokyo Olympics, as she wasn't included on the United States' 4x100m relay team in the list of athletes released by USA Track & Field on Tuesday.
After winning the 100m dash at the U.S. Olympic trials on June 19 in Eugene, Oregon, Richardson received a 30-day suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for testing positive for marijuana.
The suspension runs through the women's 100m dash (July 30 and 31) but not the women's 4x100m relay (Aug. 5 and 6) at the upcoming Olympics, allowing for the possibility that Richardson could participate in the latter event.
Though marijuana is legal in Oregon, the substance is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which the USADA adheres to.
In a July 2 appearance on "TODAY," the 21-year-old Richardson said she used marijuana to cope with the recent death of her mother.
