Canada's Damian Warner won the gold medal in men's decathlon Thursday in Tokyo, capping a dominant two-day performance in extremely difficult conditions.

He finished with 9,018 points in the event, a new Olympic record. Warner's only the fourth man in history to hit 9,000 points, and the first to do so at the Olympics. The 31-year-old reached the pinnacle of his sport in Tokyo, despite the brutal heat, after winning bronze in Rio in 2016.

France's Kevin Mayer took the silver medal and Australia's Ashley Moloney won bronze. USA's Garrett Scantling finished fourth and Canada's Pierce LePage finished fifth.
