The 1999 Open Championship at Carnoustie was Jean van de Velde's for the taking. The Frenchman stepped to the 18th tee with a three-stroke lead, needing a six to win. But there would be no storybook ending for Van de Velde, who triple-bogeyed the hole and ceded the championship to Paul Lawrie in a playoff.
