Former Open winner Roberto De Vicenzo dies at 94
Roberto De Vicenzo, the first Argentinian golfer to win a major title, died Thursday at the age of 94.
De Vicenzo claimed the 1967 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, beating Jack Nicklaus by two shots, and would go on to win eight PGA Tour titles in his career.
Despite a World Golf Hall of Fame career, the Argentinian is best remembered for signing an incorrect scorecard at the 1968 Masters. De Vincenzo made a birdie at the 17th hole, which would've forced an 18-hole playoff the following day with Bob Goalby, but signed for a par after round, handing the green jacket to Goalby.
"I play golf all over the world for 30 years, and now all I can think of is what a stupid I am to be wrong in this wonderful tournament," De Vicenzo said after the error was discovered.
