Hughes rallies to top-20 finish with final-round 66 at Travelers
Mackenzie Hughes threw down five birdies on the back nine Sunday to shoot a final-round 66 and climb 25 spots into a tie for 17th place.
The finish came after an up-and-down tournament for Hughes, who opened his tournament with a 67 on Thursday, when he made five birdies and two bogeys. The Dundas, Ontario, native hit just six fairways on Friday, but fought his way to a even-par 70, and headed into the weekend just five back of leader Jordan Spieth.
On Saturday, the 26-year-old was even par for the round with five holes to go, but sandwiched a birdie at No. 6 with two bogeys to finish the day with a 1-over-par 71.
Hughes was great on the greens at TPC River Highlands all tournament long, resulting in the best strokes gained: putting for the week of the entire field with 9.166.
| Stat | Total | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Fairways hit | 33/56 | T60 |
| Greens hit | 50/72 | T28 |
| Putts per GIR | 1.66 | 5 |
The reigning RSM Classic champion fell out of the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings, however, which would have given Hughes an exemption for next month's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
