McIlroy: Tiger vs. Phil has 'missed the mark'

Add Rory McIlroy to the list PGA Tour pros with little interest in watching "The Match" between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

The Northern Irishman had some harsh words for the Nov. 23 duel, according to Pat Ralph of Golf.com.

"Look, if they had done it 15 years ago it would have been great," McIlroy said Tuesday in Dubai. "But nowadays, it's missed the mark a little bit."

It's a sentiment shared by a few other pros, including Justin Thomas, who made his intention to skip the broadcast known in October when he tweeted, “Love TW and Phil to death, but there’s a 0 percent chance I order that.”

At one point it seemed there was a small possibility McIlroy would watch the contest thanks to one of the competitors.

"(Mickelson) took $25 out of his pocket and said, 'No, here's $25. I'll pay for it for you. Thank you,'" McIlroy recalled.

Who knows where that money ended up.

Jordan Spieth remains the only notable Tour pro to admit he's planning to watch the $9-million showdown at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas.
