Rickie Fowler, Justin Thomas, and Harold Varner III sit atop the leaderboard after Round 1 of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, as the trio all fired 7-under rounds of 64 on Thursday.

Fowler and Thomas set the pace at TPC Scottsdale's Stadium Course, carding their bogey-free rounds in the morning wave of tee times. Varner managed to catch the clubhouse leaders with his eight-birdie performance in the afternoon.

Martin Laird and J.T. Poston are one shot behind the group in first.

Plenty of marquee names linger near the top of the leaderboard with lots of golf left to be played, including Bubba Watson (5-under), Matt Kuchar (4-under), Jon Rahm (4-under), and Xander Schauffele (4-under).

Amateur Matthew Wolff carded an impressive 4-under 67 in his first PGA Tour start. The fourth-ranked amateur in the world received a sponsor's exemption into the Phoenix Open.

Phil Mickelson - a three-time winner of the Phoenix Open - carded an opening-round 68 to put him four shots behind the leaders.

Notable Tony Finau opened with a disappointing 1-over 72.

Round 2 begins Friday at 9:20 a.m. ET.
