Bubba seeking help from Bryson for new putting style
Bubba Watson and his putter have never been best friends throughout his career. Now, he's seeking help from a more reliable friend, Bryson DeChambeau, to fix the issue.
Watson has been imitating the putting style of his "best friend" during this week's Waste Management Phoenix Open after seeking the 25-year-old's advice, using DeChambeau's arm-lock method on the greens.
"I try to copy the other guys hitting fairways, try to copy the other guys hitting greens, and now I'm going to copy Bryson on putting," Watson said Friday after the tournament's second round, according to Golf Channel's Brentley Romine.
DeChambeau was one of the first to put the unique putting style into play, with Matt Kuchar, Keegan Bradley, and now Bubba following suit.
"I'm not asking for like tips on how to read greens, I'm just asking about how to do (the method), how to set it up, and how to get it in the right position. That is the kind of stuff I want to know," Watson added.
The two-time Masters champ is in contention at TPC Scottsdale at 9-under through two rounds. However, he still seems to be adjusting to the new method, as he ranks outside the top 80 in strokes gained: putting.
"I had two three-putts today just because of lag putting, trying to get that right, because it's a different feel," Watson said. "Inside 15 feet, though, it's a no-brainer. It feels so solid. I might not make all the putts that I want to make, but that's what golfers do, right? They complain about not making enough."
