Mickelson may skip The Players: 'It's not a must-play for me'
Much has been made about the revamped Players Championship with its move to March, increased purse to become the largest in golf, and shiny new trophy.
But for Phil Mickelson, the PGA Tour's flagship event isn't one that he necessarily feels the need to participate in.
"It’s not one I feel like I have to play," Mickelson said, according to Golf.com's Pat Ralph. "It’s not a must-play for me because I’m 48 and I’ve played it 25 times and I’ve already won it. If I were young and early in my career, I would say yes because I think it’s as close to a major as it can get. But it’s not the best course for me."
With the move to March, The Players now falls in the middle of a busy Florida stretch while golfers begin preparation for the Masters.
Mickelson alluded to cutting back his schedule upon returning home from the 2018 Ryder Cup, saying he was "absolutely exhausted" after a jam-packed summer.
