Alex Cejka DQ'd from Honda Classic for using illegal greens book
The season of rule infractions on the PGA Tour continues.
Alex Cejka became the first player to be disqualified under the new Rules of Golf for using an illegal green-reading book on Thursday. His week at the Honda Classic ended midway through his first round.
The 48-year-old German was referencing last year's version of the greens book for PGA National, which uses a larger scale and is bigger than the allowed 4.25 inches by 7 inches size.
"It was brought to the committee's attention that Alex might possibly be using some old greens reading materials," said PGA Tour rules official Robby Ware, according to Golf Digest's Brian Wacker. "Alex was basically using an old yardage book and old greens reading materials that did not fit the size to scale limit."
Ironically, Cejka's greens book would have been referencing dated information as the putting surfaces at PGA National were redone in 2018.
Cameron Tringale noticed the illegal reference material on the 10th hole and immediately informed a rules official.
"I saw it and told my caddie," Tringale said. "I mentioned it to (Cejka) but was unfamiliar how exactly to proceed. I told the first official I saw what I had seen."
Cejka was made aware of the infraction on the 13th and was officially disqualified one hole later.
"When we finished the 14th hole, I went to use the bathroom and when I came out I saw (Cejka) riding off in a cart," Tringale added.
His disqualification at the Honda Classic marks the eighth total of Cejka's career, according to the Official World Golf Rankings.
