Matsuyama, Scott earn spots on International Presidents Cup team
The conclusion of the BMW Championship also marked the end of the qualifying period for each of the American and International Presidents Cup teams heading to Royal Melbourne for December's exhibition event.
Eight golfers solidified their place on the Ernie Els-captained International squad, highlighted by Hideki Matsuyama and Adam Scott. Here's the complete list:
- Marc Leishman (Australia)
- Hideki Matsuyama (Japan)
- Louis Oosthuizen (South Africa)
- Adam Scott (Australia)
- Abraham Ancer (Mexico)
- Haotong Li (China)
- C.T. Pan (Chinese Taipei)
- Cameron Smith (Australia)
Surprisingly, Jason Day will require a captain's selection from Els after finishing ninth in the points list. PGA Tour rookie-of-the-year candidate Sungjae Im and Canadian Corey Conners will also need Els to pick them if they are to join the team.
The International team has won only one Presidents Cup since the inaugural event in 1994. However, its lone victory was at Royal Melbourne in 1998 when it defeated the Americans 20.5-11.5.
The 2019 Presidents Cup begins Dec. 9 in Melbourne, Australia.
