Scott fires 7-under 65 to share 1st-round lead at Safeway Open
Adam Scott and Andrew Landry share the first-round lead at the Safeway Open after firing 7-under 65s at Silverado Resort's North Course.
Scott took advantage of early-morning conditions in Napa, California. The Aussie made six birdies and an eagle in his Safeway Open debut to post his lowest opening-round score since the 2014 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
The world's No. 15-ranked player is winless since 2016.
Landry, who won the 2018 Texas Open, grabbed his share of the lead with a bogey-free round in the afternoon. He's missed both cuts to start his 2019-20 season.
Francesco Molinari posted a somewhat surprising 6-under 66 after making the long trip from England to California.
Here's how the top of the leaderboard stands after Round 1:
Place | Player | To Par | R1 Score |
---|---|---|---|
T1 | Adam Scott | -7 | 65 |
T1 | Andrew Landry | -7 | 65 |
T3 | Francesco Molinari | -6 | 66 |
T3 | Matthew NeSmith | -6 | 66 |
T5 | Cameron Champ | -5 | 67 |
T5 | Adam Long | -5 | 67 |
T5 | Chris Baker | -5 | 67 |
Even with plenty of players going low, it was amateur Tony Romo who stole the show on Day 1. The former quarterback carded a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 28th in what was his best performance in seven rounds on the PGA Tour.
Romo beat a handful of notables in Round 1, including Justin Thomas (1-under), Hideki Matsuyama (even), and Phil Mickelson (3-over).
Round 2 of the Safeway Open begins Friday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
