Woods on defeating Ancer: 'Abe wanted it; he got it'
When Abraham Ancer was asked who he would like to play against at the Presidents Cup, Ancer said he wanted to face Tiger Woods - and his wish came true.
Captain Ernie Els put Ancer out first for Sunday's singles matches and Tiger quickly reacted with his own name. Like most golfers going up against Woods, it didn't end well for Ancer. Woods won 3-and-2 despite a solid effort from the Mexican.
"Abe wanted it; he got it," Tiger said after the Americans won 16-14.
Woods also made it clear that he was well aware of what Ancer said in November. At the Mayakoba Golf Classic, the rookie admitted he hoped to face Woods and added: "The truth is that our objective is to do everything we can to win. Winning a match in singles would be very special."
Asked about his experience facing Woods, Ancer reiterated Sunday that his comments weren't intended as disrespectful.
"When they asked me that at Mayakoba, first of all, that question was in Spanish, so the tone when I said it, it was never like cocky or challenging or anything like that," Ancer said. "At the moment I thought it would be a great experience, which it was. No matter what, with the outcome of the match, I would have gained a lot. I would have become a better player just from being in that situation."
Ancer was one of the Internationals' top players, earning 3.5 points and playing in all five sessions for the losing team.
