The 2019 Player of the Year will compete in the event, which begins Jan. 23, for only the second time in his career after finishing T-5 last year.
McIlroy joins a stacked field also featuring Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Xander Schauffele, and Gary Woodland for the tournament in San Diego. Tiger Woods is expected to start his season at Torrey Pines as well.
McIlroy's presence at Torrey Pines also reaffirms his commitment to playing a PGA Tour-focused scheduled this season. While the Northern Irishman is in California, the European Tour will be in the Middle East for the popular Dubai Desert Classic, which McIlroy has played four times since 2014.
The 30-year-old already won this season at the HSBC-WGC Champions event in China. He claimed three victories, including The Players Championship, during the 2018-19 campaign.
