Sungjae Im earns 1st PGA Tour title with Honda Classic victory
Sungjae Im posted a final-round 66 to win the Honda Classic by one stroke over Mackenzie Hughes for his first PGA Tour title.
The 21-year-old entered Sunday at PGA National trailing 54-hole leader Tommy Fleetwood by three shots but carded four birdies in the opening five holes to erase the deficit.
After stumbling slightly midway through the final round, Im birdied Nos. 15 and 17 - both par-3s on the daunting stretch of holes referred to as the "Bear Trap" - to get back to 4-under for the day and finish the event at 6-under.
Here are Im's highlights from Nos. 15 and 17:
The South Korean's first career victory comes a season after winning the 2018-19 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year award. He's now the fifth player on the International Presidents Cup team to collect a winner's check in the 2019-20 season, joining Joaquin Niemann, Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, and Adam Scott.
Im's playing partner, Hughes, who also shot a 4-under 66 on Sunday, had a birdie putt on the final hole that would have forced a playoff, but he missed it. The duo carded two of the four lowest rounds Sunday at PGA National.
Hughes entered the week with five straight missed cuts and no finish better than T-55 in his last 12 PGA Tour starts.
Fleetwood attempted to force a playoff with Im after making birdie on No. 17 to get within one stroke. However, he put his approach shot from 234 yards into the water on the par-5 closing hole and wound up making bogey. He finished alone in third at 4-under.
Here's how the top of the leaderboard ended up:
