Hadwin, Conners agree with Canada's decision to pull out of Tokyo 2020

Adam Hadwin and Corey Conners, Canada's highest-ranked golfers, defended the Canadian Olympic Committee's decision to pull out of the 2020 Games in Tokyo if they are not postponed.

"The COC is taking the best interests of the health and safety of the athletes over medals," Hadwin said, according to TSN's Bob Weeks. "That's what's important right now."

On Sunday, the COC and Canadian Paralympic Committee made Canada the first country to state it would not send athletes to Tokyo if the Summer Olympics aren't rescheduled in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although they're no longer destined to be teammates in 2020, Conners agrees with Hadwin.

"It's obviously disappointing for all the athletes but it's the right decision," he told Weeks. "It would be tough to go under the current conditions."

Conners sits behind Hadwin in the Official World Golf Ranking, and the two were all but guaranteed to represent their country for the first time. Brooke Henderson and Alena Sharp would have been the representatives on the women's side.

The golf component of the Summer Games is scheduled to run from July 30 to Aug. 8.
