Spieth makes debatable ace due to cup modified for social distancing
Jordan Spieth made the rarest hole-in-one during the Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational, a three-day charity event in Texas.
Or did he?
Spieth, who wasn't officially entered into the competition that featured PGA Tour pros Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler, was playing as a marker for Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.
On the par-3 17th, Spieth's ball landed directly in the cup for what should have been an ace. However, due to the modified cups being used during the coronavirus pandemic, Spieth's ball hit the spacer that was placed inside the hole to prevent players from touching the flagstick.
Here's an example of what it looks like:

Instead of landing in the hole, Spieth's ball bounced out and rolled into the water. His ball had a visible scuff mark from the spacer placed inside the hole.
Speith with an Ace or Double Bogey on 17? It sunk in the hole, bounced out (we believe 100% because of the spacer - see scuff marks on new ball) and rolled back in the water. Romo decided it could be counted as a hole in one, except for their bet. pic.twitter.com/NTHzWnXWlt

"I'm going to count it," Spieth said, according to Golf Channel's Brentley Romine. "It was one of those ones where it would most likely have stayed in. ... I've been shut out for a while, so hopefully this is a good omen."
It would have been the 26-year-old's first ace in roughly four years, according to Romine.
