21 days until golf: Cut record might be Tiger's most incredible stat
The PGA Tour plans to restart its season June 11 after halting due to the coronavirus pandemic. Each day until then, we'll highlight key moments, people, or facts relating to where we are in the countdown.
Tiger Woods set a lot of records prefaced with words like "most," "largest," and "longest" during his illustrious career. However, one of the more overlooked stats regarding the 15-time major winner relates to a number that stands out because of its low total.
Woods has played in 394 events as a professional worldwide and failed to make the 36-hole cut only 21 times. That means he's played on the Saturday of a tournament nearly 95% of the time.
The main reason for this jaw-dropping stat is the fact Tiger put together the PGA Tour's longest streak of consecutive cuts made with 142, which ran for over seven years. The streak began at the Buick Invitational in February of 1998 and ended in May 2005.
Justin Thomas is one of the many who believe Woods' 142 consecutive cuts made streak is the most untouchable out of the 44-year-old's laundry list of accomplishments.
During the seven-year stretch, Woods won 42 times worldwide including eight major championships.
Woods' streak broke Byron Nelson's previous mark (113) by 29 starts to set the new standard. Ironically, Tiger's run ended when he missed the cut at the 2005 Byron Nelson Championship.
No one, including Tiger, has put together a streak of 50 straight made cuts on the PGA Tour since Woods' stretch of 142. Ernie Els, Adam Scott, and Steve Stricker all had runs end in the 40s.
